Who should seek orthodontic treatment?
Both children
and adults can benefit from orthodontic treatment. When the orthodontist
evaluates your teeth, he or she is looking for discrepancies in
tooth alignment, jaw size and chewing function. Some common dental
problems treated with orthodontics include: crowded teeth, excess
spacing, missing or extra teeth, excessive overbite or overjet (protruding
teeth), open bites, underbites, and crossbites. Improving dental
alignment and function will make it easier for you to clean and
maintain your teeth. Orthodontics may also help you avoid other
dental problems associated with a poor bite, such as irregular tooth
wear, abnormal stress on the supporting gum tissue and bone, or
jaw joint discomfort.
